Spring Break Pj Party: Tween Edition!

My ladies have yet to have their Spring Break….BUT….they have it all planned out! The first thing on their list is to build a fort in the back room where they can have a fire and a movie going while they eat popcorn and drink root-beer. Sounds like fun to me! So of course I had to join in the Party and make my ladies a new pair of PJ’s. Since we are sewing from our pattern stash for this one I had to think when the last time I made the kids a pair of PJ’s was. Blog to the rescue! It was…December 1st 2014… hmmm…. I guess they are in need of a new pair of PJ’s. So what pattern did I find in my Stash?
This is a fun pattern that has many options. However I ran into two problems for this particular project. The first is that the size range is limited to 12 Months to 8 Years. My youngest daughter fell within the size 8 measurements still, but my older two daughters were beyond the chart. A few measurements and an extra 20 minutes and I graded the two additional sizes that I needed. Problem solved.
The next problem is what made this pattern so fun to make again. My little girls have turned into tweens, almost overnight, and such things as ruffles and stuffed animals are out. They have been replaced by more ‘tween-ish’ words and styles. And so we made the Tween Edition of the Ruffled PJ’s by Once Upon a Sewing Machine.
Seeing as it is Spring we made the short version of the pattern and included the optional cuff. While showing the ladies the pattern, I was informed that ruffles were ‘to little girl-ish.’ So we left the ruffles off and in true-to-tween-form, once they saw the simplicity of the PJ’s they asked if they could look in my stash for something fancy to add onto the cuff. They came back with trims. I have to admit that I was super excited to see what they found. I love trims and these bright colors scream spring.
Each little lady wanted her own color and since the fabric I choose to use was black and white the brightness of the trim was just the touch that we needed. They were also inspired by the bright array of colors in my trim box and my jar of sharpies, and they added a hint of color to the fabric. Then of course we needed to paint our nails the same color as the trim for the pictures and all of a sudden the simple PJ’s photos for mom’s blog turned into practice for Spring Break spa treatments.
A little warm water, a face scrubber, some salt scrub, a cool eye-mask and their soft besties (not to be mistakenly called ‘stuffed animals’ anymore – trust me I learned the hard way!) and the tween gauge was at full throttle and the perfect photo shoot began! This is such a fun phase of life to see. I did not grow up with a sister and yet this is all that I dreamed it would be!
Of course part of being a ‘tween’ is the momentary lapse of maturity, as they become engulfed in the joy, wonder, and ease of childhood! I have adored raising little girls, but I must admit that raising little ‘tweens’ is a whole lot of fun. I know that this is a small phase of life, yet I am so grateful to be able to capture these sweet moments.

Our Spring Break will begin next week and from the look of things these ‘tweens’ and their new PJ’s will be having the time of their lives! I had so much fun tweaking OUSM’s Ruffled PJ’s and giving them a ‘tween’ styling that I think I will have to revisit a few other patterns that I have packed away as for ‘little girls only!’ Do you have ‘tweens’? I would love to know how you have tweaked your Pattern Stash to accommodate for the ever changing styles of your tween!
