SLPCo Jane & Daphne Mash-up for School Spirit!

It is almost time to send my littles back to school! I never really know if this excites me or leaves me a bit melancholy. I do know however, that we have a wonderful local school with amazing teachers and school pride! Every Friday is Spirit-Day. On Spirit-Day the children are encouraged to wear school colors, fill each others buckets with good deeds, and say thank you to the school staff. Our school colors are Black & Gold. With three kids attending our school, there are often “aggressive negotiations” over the few gold and black items before school. So, this begin said I was excited to jump on Simple Life Pattern Company’s Spirit Pride Day for our Back to School Tour!

There are so many wonderful patterns that I could have chosen to make, but I wanted to show you all a fun new Mash-Up. It is no secret that I am particular to the Jane Romper & Dress Pattern (it is my first PDF Pattern) but another favorite of mine is the Daphne’s Double Skirt. I love how simple and stylish it is. I also love that it has huge oversized pockets! Today I am going to show you how to turn your Jane Romper & Dress pattern into a shirt only. Then we are going to pair it up with a denim Daphne Skirt for the perfect School-Spirit outfit!!!

The first thing you have to do is purchase and assemble your Jane pattern. We are only going to use the following pattern pieces; Back Bodice & Front Bodice. Jane has two bodice options, Flat Front or Pieced. I choose the Pieced Bodice and added the optional ruffles. To make Jane as a shirt you will need to add 1.5″- 2″ ( depending on the torso length of your child) to the ‘Romper Cut Line’ at the base of both your Back Bodice and Front Bodice pieces. You can do this by cutting a scrap of paper at 1.5″- 2″ and taping it to the bottom of your pattern.

Once you have done this you will cut out your bodice pieces, bias strips, button plackets, and ruffle and/or pockets if you would like to add them. Jane can also be made with or without sleeves. You will follow the tutorial through to Step 30 (depending on the options you will include). Once you have completed these steps you will simple hem your new Jane Shirt, by folding 1/2″ to the wrong side, pressing, then folding again 1/2″ to the wrong side. Topstitch the hem and you are done!

Now you can pair your new Jane Shirt with another great SLPCo pattern, like the Daphne Skirt! For my Jane shirt I used Art Gallery’s in house design Twigged Path in Voile, available in our shop! This took care of black as one of our school colors, but I also needed gold. Gold is a very hard color to capture in fabric. While I was thinking about gold fabrics in our shop that would be durable enough and yet still stylish for my girls at school, Art Gallery’s Denim was the first thing that came to mind! I love AGF Denim! It is vibrant, beautiful, so comfortable to wear, and the Canyon Sunset was exactly the color that I needed!

However making the Daphne Skirt in denim meant that I had to gather a lot of denim. So here are few tips & tricks so that you can make your own! The first thing I did was to cut down the width of the skirt panels by 2″ each (I made a 4W). The structure of the denim will give you the fullness that you crave without needing the full width of the panel piece. I also would not suggest making both layers as it will be too thick. The second tip I have for you is to take your sweet time, use two gather-stitch lines (this technique makes such pretty gathers!) and gather the denim in little sections.

Next tip: Don’t use pins, you will just bend them! I used wonder clips – a lot of wonder clips and it worked so perfectly! It was fast, secure, and did not add any additional bulk that my machine could complain about.

I am so in love with how this ย Jane & Daphne Mash-Up turned out! My little lady looks comfortable, stylish, and she is all about that School Spirit!

  1. I didn't realize how stunning the Canyon Sunset is! I adore the skirt and of course love the Jane top! It's the perfect top. I'm also really jealous of your school colors. Not that homeschooling we can't choose our own. LOL
